Counselling is not covered by MSP. However, counselling is covered by most extended health coverage plans either partially or fully. Ensure to check with your insurance provider whether you have coverage for a Registered Clinical Counselling (RCC). We do not direct bill insurance companies. Upon payment, you will receive a receipt which you can submit to your insurance and subsequently get reimbursed.

We accept Interac E-transfer and all major credit cards. Through our booking system, Jane, you can save a credit card on your profile for easy payment processing. Alternatively, you can send an e-transfer on the day of the session to info@perceptionscounselling.ca. All receipts will be emailed to you within 24 hours of your session.

A minimum of 24 hours notice is required for cancelling appointments. If less than 24 hours notice is given, or in the case of a no show, the client will be charged the full session fee. Cancellations can be made via email or through your Jane account page.

Yes, we offer both in person and virtual counselling options. To learn more, visit our contact page to book a complimentary 15-minute consultation, or fill out a contact form. Both are equally effective! It depends what you prefer and what your counsellor may recommend.

The standard counselling session is 50-minutes. However, we offer extended (75-minutes) and double sessions (100-minutes) upon request. For OCD treatment, sometimes it is necessary to book an extended session and this can be discussed during treatment.

Absolutely! Confidentiality is crucial to the counselling process and is maintained. There are a few limitations where it is the counsellor’s ethical duty to report:

  • If there is reason that you or someone else is in imminent danger (risk of suicide of homicide)
  • If there is reason to believe that a child/youth is being abused, neglected or mistreated
  • If a client’s records are subpoenaed by the court and compliance is required by law.

All information communicated via telephone or internet (ie. Jane video sessions, phone sessions) will be in compliance with PIPA privacy standards.

It’s normal to be nervous for your first session! There is nothing that you need to prepare. In the first session we will first go over the consent form so that you understand the counselling process. The first session is an intake session, so the counsellor typically asks more questions than normal to guide the client. These questions also help to identify your counselling goals. The first session is also a chance to assess fit with your counsellor. Ultimately, the first session is a chance for the counsellor to better understand you and for you to assess the fit of your counsellor.

One of the most important factors in counselling for beneficial outcomes is the relationship between the client and the counsellor. Also, it is important that the counsellor has the right competencies and expertise for the challenges you are seeking counselling for. Therefore, the consultation can be seen as a brief screener to assess the overall fit of the counsellor for the client and vice versa.

In terms of frequency, we suggest that clients begin therapy by coming weekly or biweekly for the first 4-6 sessions. The therapist and client will then discuss when it is time to move to monthly counselling, depending on the counselling goals.

The number of sessions needed depends on the person and what they are seeking counselling for. Some people come in and out of therapy at different points in their life. Some people continue with monthly counselling. Some people find that they have solutions after only a few sessions.

For OCD treatment, clients come for weekly exposure sessions. Treatment can last for 12-20 sessions depending on the client.

Proactive counselling, as opposed to reactive counselling, is absolutely beneficial. This way, you will already have the tools to tackle challenges as they come up in life. Many clients come to counselling monthly for maintenance rather than only coming when a difficulty arises. Either is welcomed at Perceptions.

You’re right! Exposure with Response Prevention is the gold standard treatment for OCD. Jordana is trained in and specializes in this type of therapy. For this type of therapy, we meet weekly beginning with assessment, creating an exposure hierarchy and then doing weekly exposures. The client’s adherence to exposure homework in between sessions is indicative of treatment outcomes. Learn more here
